Nestled between four towering mountain ranges, this hidden world has remained preserved from modern influences, offering an unparalleled sense of remoteness and wonder. Following an ancient and nearly forgotten caravan route, we step into the valley's rich history, tracing a trail lined with Ottoman stone bridges and Orthodox churches—silent remnants of civilizations that once flourished here. This gentler route provides ample time to appreciate the changing landscapes and the majestic Mt. Cajupi (2,145 m), a silent witness to generations of resilience. Passing through the hamlets of Vithuq, Koncka, and Nivan, we see remnants of the past—a wartime bunker, an abandoned depot, and a square honoring Tilman, one of the last true explorers of the 20th century. As we descend through oak forests, the path leads us to a quiet riverbank monastery, where time seems to pause. A short detour reveals the Ottoman stone bridges, which stand as a resilient testament to history. Our final stop is Sheper, a village shaped by displacement. Once home to nomadic Aromanian shepherds, many were forced to settle here when Albania’s borders closed in the 1940s. The ruins of a museum and fading Marxist slogans etched on old buildings whisper reminders of a communist past that reshaped countless lives. While modern roads often fail to match the efficiency of this ancient trail, our luggage is transported by horse, just as it has been for generations. At the foot of the Dhembel Range, remnants of Enver Hoxha’s bunkers still stand, guarding the entrance to the pass. Shepherds have long followed this route, migrating from Albania’s southernmost tip to the meadows of the Pindus Mountains—a journey that can last up to two weeks with their flocks. The alpine valley, a vibrant sea of wildflowers in spring and strikingly beautiful in other seasons, leads to the Dhembel Pass (1,450 m). His novel Chronicle in Stone captures the essence of this town, where houses are built so steeply into the hillside that one roof serves as another’s doorstep. Declared a "museum town," Gjirokastër survived socialist-era modernization and remains one of Albania’s best-preserved historic centers. After exploring the impressive hilltop castle, you can opt to join a guided walk through the upper quarters, visiting an Ottoman bridge, or take time to wander the cobbled streets at your own pace. Lunch is at your leisure—enjoy a meal at one of the many charming local tavernas that offer authentic flavors.
In the afternoon, we travel to Tirana, Albania’s dynamic and ever-evolving capital.
